New Year, New (Relief for) You!

As a member pharmacy of PCCA (Professional Compounders Centers of America), we have their team of devoted scientists working behind-the-scenes to research and develop compounding bases that best address the needs of the industry. PCCA’s bases are creams or gels that provide optimal drug delivery either transdermally (through the skin) or topically (on the skin).

The Problem

The work that PCCA’s scientists do is so important in the ever-changing regulatory world of compounding. As compounders, we follow guidelines set forth by the FDA and United States Pharmacopeia (USP). Most recently, USP Chapters <795> and <797> include new regulations that will further restrict how long compounding pharmacies can mark beyond-use dates (BUD) for medications. BUDs are how long compounded medications can be used before needing to be discarded by the patient. Thus, shorter BUDs means patients will need to refill their prescriptions more frequently.

The Solution

To help their member pharmacies with these BUD challenges, PCCA has created several anhydrous bases that fall into the specifications outlines in the USP chapters mentioned above. These bases have lower water activity than their peers, allowing for medications made with them to have longer beyond-use dates.

The PCCA anhydrous base family includes:

  • VersaBase® Anhydrous HRT : Designed to improve the solubility of molecules, such as hormones, and is proven to increase the permeation of those molecules into and through the skin.

  • PermE8® Anhydrous Gel: Provides enhanced delivery of topical pain medications through the skin.

  • WO6® Anhydrous Topical Gel: An elegant base that is suitable for a broad range of dermatological and cosmetic applications.

  • And now, we have a new, anhydrous gel specifically designed for use on the vaginal tissue. We are so excited to introduce Ellage® Anhydrous Vaginal to our patients!

Meet Ellage

This base is the first anhydrous base developed specifically for vaginal applications in the compounding industry. It is designed to be gentle on vaginal tissue while maintaining contact with the mucosa for optimum drug delivery.

The Patient Benefits

Ellage provides a unique and pleasant experience for patients with various health challenges who need compounded vaginal medication. Another benefit is what you will not find in this base. It has been formulated without ingredients such as wheat, milk, egg, soy, fish, peanuts, almonds, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, macadamia and gluten. Finally, Ellage is anhydrous and medications made with this base have longer BUDs, meaning a lesser need for patients to refill their prescriptions.

The Proof

Ellage is backed by science. There are several studies published by PCCA Science that show how well this base releases APIs, such as estriol, testosterone, amitriptyline and baclofen, through to the vaginal tissue. Other studies show that it does not irritate the vaginal tissue nor change the pH, and it is likely to adhere to vaginal tissue for a long period of time without leakage.
